  • Oregano scientific name Origanum vulgare, is a flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is native to temperate western and southwestern Eurasia and the Mediterranean region. Oregano is a perennial herb, growing from 20–80 cm tall, with opposite leaves 1–4 cm long. The flowers are purple, 3–4 mm long, produced in erect spikes. It is sometimes called wild marjoram, and its close relative O. majorana is known as sweet marjoram.

Oregano contains polyphenols, including numerous flavones. The essential oil of oregano is composed primarily of monoterpenoids and monoterpenes, with the relative concentration of each compound varying widely across geographic origin and other factors. Over 60 different compounds have been identified, with the primary ones being carvacrol and thymol ranging to over 80%, while lesser abundant compounds include p-cymene, γ-terpinene, caryophyllene, spathulenol, germacrene-D, β-fenchyl alcohol and δ-terpineol.

The most valuable medicinal substance in oily oil is a carvacrol - ingredient that has strong antibacterial properties.

British scientists in their research have confirmed that oregano oil is effectively against 25 different bacteria.

It is effective against most bacteria that cause colon and urinary tract infection, typhus, cholera, ulcer and skin infections.

Apart from destroying bacteria, oregano oil has powerful antiviral activity and effectively protects against flu, colds, water shards, mumps and measles. The fact is that it can stop the disease even when the symptoms appear.

Evidence of the healing properties of oregano oil is growing. Between 52 tested plants, only the oregano oil was active on Candidus Albicans, E-coli, Salmonella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas is a type of bacterium that is particularly difficult to treat because some strains are immune to antibiotics. Growing number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria worries medical experts. Many bacteria already show resistance to vancomycin, especially intestinal bacteria such as Enterococcus. Vancomycin is considered to be the strongest existing antibiotic, which is only used in the latter case.

Aggressive anti-inflammatory properties of oregano oil prevent stubborn infections such as candidiasis, nail and scalp fungus and athletic foot.

In case of candidiasis, the oil is can be use in drink, and it can be applied locally to fingernails. It is recommended to add a few drops of oil for shampoos in the case of fungus causing dandruff.
