  • Leonotis nepetifolia, (also known as klip dagga, Christmas candlestick, or lion's ear), is a species of plant in the genus Leonotis and the family Lamiaceae (mint). It is native to tropical Africa and southern India. It can also be found growing abundantly in much of Latin America and the West Indies.

An erect tropical anual, growing up to 4 meters high. The stem is angled (square); smooth levaes with toothed margines and and orange flowers are born in spiny clusters. striking lipped flowers, that are most commonly orange, but can vary to red, white, and purple. It has drooping dark green, very soft serrated leaves that can grow up to 10 centimetres in wide. Flowers are attrected by ants, hummingbirds, sunbirds and butterflies.

Leonotis nepetifolia (klip dagga) is related to L. leonurus (wild dagga or lion's tail.) The most noticeable difference between the two is the leaf shape. L. nepetifolia leaves are cordate with serrated edges, except the top pair which are lanceolate with serrated edges, as pictured in taxonomy box. The leaves are all lanceolate with serrated edges on L. leonurus.

The dried foliage (herb) of  Leonitis nepetifolia has psycho-active properties and it is used as a legal substitute for cannabis. L. nepetifolia has midly narcotic effect and it is used in medicinal purposes.

Smoking drued herbs gives an euforic-like and exuberance due to one of actice compounds, the midly psycho-active alakaloid leonurine and other diterpenes (leosibiricine, leosibirine and isoleosiberine). The flowers are the most potent part and can also smoked or used as a calming tea. Leonitis nepetifolia contains more leonurine and any other „dagga“ species.

Chemical structure consists of; alkaloids (leonurine and stachydrene), iridoid glycoside (leonuride), iridoid glycosides (leonurine and leonuridine), diterpenoids (leocardin), flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, hyperoside and apigenin), volatile oil, tannins and vitamin A.

    Medicinal applications

The different alkaloids, flavonoids, diterpenoids, polyphenolics, iridoid glycosides and other compounds of Leonitis nepetifolia may be involved in the observed anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic effects on plant's extract. However, results suggest that the aqueous leaf exctract posseses anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory and hypoglycemic properies, and thus lend pharmacological credence to the suggested folkloric of this herb in the managment and/or control of painful, athritic and other inflammatory conditions as well as for type-2 diabetes mellitus. It is also anti-asthmatic and has anti-diarrhea properties.

In Trinidand's traditional medicine, an infusion is used againts fever, caughs, womb prolapsed and malaria.

The group of plants Leonitis species are also called Motherwort; similar compoud present. Leonitis nepetifolia and Leonotus leonorus are excellent heart tonics; able to calm palpitations, tachycardia and irregular heart-beats. They are used for heart conditions associated to anxiety and tension. This plants have an effect on uterus; depending on a dose, they stimaulate or suppress menstruation.
